One of the things I really like to do is go to see a play. I especially enjoy the small theater experience which is a more intimate way to enjoy a live theatrical production – and, luckily, there are lots of small theaters in Los Angeles, with a variety of plays to choose from at any time. One of my favorites is the Sacred Fools Theater in the East Hollywood area. Thursday night we went to see “A Kind of Love Story” at Sacred Fools, and it ended up being really good. A comedy about two soulmates who are destined to be together – if only they could ever meet! With each character’s tale of romantic woes taking place on opposite sides of the stage, a narrator relates the story, via loudspeaker, of nerdy Mark (all the women he dates think of him as just a “friend”) – and bookish Ally, pretty but a good girl who just can’t seem to meet the right fellow. And she just can’t seem to let go of the creep of a “boyfriend” she has, and that boyfriend character was one of the funniest things about this show – wow, the actor had the cad/jerk boyfriend down pat! Also really enjoyed the character of Ally’s roommate, a “dumb blonde” bombshell who spends her evenings juggling men and doles out advice to Ally in regards to online dating and dating in general. Ally gets – literally – pushed down a lot (perhaps she should have considered a different circle of pals and acquaintances long ago).
I have seen quite a few plays at the Sacred Fools Theater, and they have almost all been really good. One thing I like about the productions this theatre company does is that they are all original, and often quite unique (even quite odd sometimes). This particular play was pretty much straight romantic comedy and very entertaining.
After the play we headed for one of our favorite late night restaurants, Fred 62 on Vermont, for dinner. About 10:40 pm when we got there, parking was easy this time (sometimes we have to search a bit for street parking), and the restaurant still had a few empty booths (the place usually gets more and more crowded the later it gets). Fred 62 is a 24-hour diner that, at least late night, is dimly lit and full of hipsters. I have several favorite things I like on the menu here – tonight I had “The Manhandler”, their version of a classic Sloppy Joe sandwich. Yum – good (but messy). Fries with that.
